Fear Friday ~ "Cute But Stupid"

When it comes to horror films I'll watch just about anything. Some elements, themes and setups I like much more than others. But one thing that goes a long way is a cute boy! Yep, cast a good lookin' man and I'm all the more interested in your offering. Unfortunately, a cute boy does not always equal a good movie. On that note enjoy tonight's film.

Fridays at the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog are Fear Fridays. Fear Fridays are a celebration of all films spooky. Horror is a very broad genre and the Lounge loves it all. Each Friday you will find a review of a different film. These can range from Classic Horror (black and white and cheesy), Thrillers (suspense, jumps and a good mystery), outright Horror (chop chop, slash slash, die die) and anything else in between.

So pop some popcorn, kill the lights and enjoy tonight's selection. And please, share your comments on the film. Bad or good let me know what you thought of it. And now, my little ghouls and dolls, the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog is proud to present this week's film.

Fear Fridays ~ Midnight Meat Train

Tagline ~ The most terrifying ride you'll ever take

Directed by RyĆ»hei Kitamura (No One Lives and Sky High) and released on August 1, 2008 by Lionsgate Films (Rated R). Struggling photographer Leon (Bradley Cooper) is told to not be afraid and show the real darkness of the city. So, armed with his camera, Leon stalks the city at night looking for shots. Unfortunately for him he finds exactly what he's looking for.

Where do I start with this one? Hmmmm.... so many things come to mind and most are not kind. Ha! But seriously, this is by no means the worst horror film I've seen (I've seen some real gems) but it's certainly far from great. It opened in very limited release here in the states then went right to DVD.

There is lots of blood!!! It squirts, runs, spills and shoots all over the place. One highlight is a cameo by Ted Raimi (Sam's brother). Just watch that eyeball fly! Ha! If you like gore then this one has plenty. If you don't like your horror with meat hooks and hanging dead bloody bodies then you should probably just leave this one alone.

This movie is an adaptation of a Clive Barker story. Had I remembered that before it started I wouldn't have been surprised by anything in it. Clive's movies are usually full of gore and at some point go off into the "otherworldly". I'll admit that Clive Barker movies have never really hit me the right way and I would have liked this story better had it been grounded in something more real. But if you're a fan of Mr. Barker then this one will probably rate higher on your list.

A horror film is always more fun to watch when they lure us in with a cute boy. And yes, that Cooper boy is quite nice to watch (and probably the only real highlight in this movie if you ask me) but I started feeling a little sad by the end that he was in it. His character is not the brightest. By the middle of the movie I had taken to calling him "cute but stupid" as he never listened every time he was told to "don't do that" or "don't go in there". But hey, we wouldn't have a horror story if people didn't do stupid things.

Midnight Meat Train is available on DVD and most online rentals.

Take a look at the original trailer...

Some trivia about the movie...
1. On its official North American release to cinemas, the film opened in 102 discount theatres, also called "dollar theatres" for their very low admission prices, rather than at regular first-run cinemas with normal ticket prices, which was a factor in its poor opening weekend box-office earnings.
2. Clive Barker provided some of the paintings seen in Susan Hoff's art gallery.
3. The train in the film is a modified 2200 Chicago elevated car.
4. Vinnie Jones and Bradley Cooper were born exactly ten years apart on January 5th. Vinnie in 1965, and Bradley in 1975.
5. Vinnie Jones' character has no lines in the whole film apart from three words at the end.

Fear Fridays ~ "Oooooh, Spooky"

In honor of our big Supernatural giveaway going on now (enter here) this week's Fear Friday fits the theme with lots of spooky and creepy moments. Oh, and one familiar demon hunter! Enjoy.

Fear Fridays - The Possession

Tagline - Fear The Demon That Doesn't Fear God

Directed by Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch) and released August 31, 2012 by Lionsgate Films (Rated PG-13). When his young daughter finds an old box with the spirit of a demon inside, Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) must find a way to stop it before it destroys his whole family. Hate it when that happens!

This week's film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Mr. John Winchester himself once again fighting a nasty demon. It's also "presented" by Sam Raimi (though I highly doubt that this title means anything more than drawing viewers in by using his name) of Evil Dead/Spiderman fame.

This is by no means a great movie but I found it enjoyable enough to watch. It's only PG-13 so it's not very scary but it is creepy. The movie is based (very loosely!) on supposed actual events. If you are interested in the "real" story of the Dibbuk Box you can read it here. I find it creepy enough that the original box was supposedly bought at a yard sale here in Portland. Oooooh, spooky!!!

The Possession is available on DVD.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. While promoting the film on Craig Ferguson [airdate 8/29/12], Jeffrey Dean Morgan reported that strange incidents took place during production that couldn't be explained. Lights exploded during the filming of key scenes; and just two days after wrapping principal photography, all of the props for the film, stored in case of re-shoots, were destroyed in a fire that mysteriously erupted from within the storage-house.
2. The book that the father brings into the house and reads at Emma's bedside is the ArtScroll/Mesorah edition of the Tenach (Jewish Bible = Old Testament), first published in 1996, and he is reading from the English translation there of Psalm 91. That edition follows the Orthodox affectation of using "HaShem" (literally, 'THE Name') where most other English versions have "The Lord"; the same substitution occurs in the Hebrew prayers recited in the synagogue and exorcism scenes.
3. The demon in the box speaks Polish.

Fear Fridays ~ "Dang, Those Zombies Can Dance"

In honor of our big Supernatural giveaway going on now (enter here) I thought this week's Fear Friday should fit the theme. So tonight's little gem features Supernatural's very own Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Everyone's favorite dad and hunter back in the days where the running joke was "Man, this guy dies in everything!". Seriously, he did! Enjoy!

Fear Friday - Dead and Breakfast

Tagline - It's like a bad horror film, only worse
              Heads will roll...

Directed by Matthew Leutwyler (This Space Between Us, Road Kill and Unearthed) and released on August 19, 2005 by Anchor Bay Entertainment (Rated R). A group of young people, on their way to a wedding, stop for the night at a bed and breakfast in the little town of Lovelock, Texas. Upon waking they find some dead bodies and an evil spirit possessing the townsfolk, turning them into Zombies. Can they stop the madness before it takes over forever? And wow, can those Zombies dance. That's right, dance!

You will either love this movie or hate it! Like the tagline says "It's like a bad horror film, only worse". That pretty much sums it up. This is a grade A hunk of cheesy fun. Lots of squirting blood, jokes and Zombies. And yes, there is a roaming band (kinda like "Something About Mary") so you have singing Zombies that even do a little dance. It's silly, funny and bad in all the best ways. If Mystery Science Theater was still around I'd like to think this would have made one of their best episodes.

As an extra treat this movie has two of my favorites in it. Jeffery Dean Morgan (Supernatural, The Watchmen and Magic City) as the Sheriff and Jeremy Sisto (May, Wrong Turn and Suburgatory-tv series) as... ahhh, let's just say The Head. It Also stars David and Ever Carradine..

Dead and Breakfast is available on DVD.

Take a look at the original trailer...

Some trivia about the movie...
1. When the group first gets to the bed and breakfast, they hear the song "The Freshmen" on the radio and sing to it. "The Freshmen" was written and performed by Brian Vander Ark, who appears as a zombie and wrote the original score to the film.
2. When the Sheriff is pulling the chainsaw out of the closet, an Evil Dead poster can be seen.
3. When Melody (Gina Philips) kills one of the zombies, the Sheriff (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) says, "Nice move, Buffy." Bianca Lawson, who plays Kate in the film, played Kendra on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series.
4. 34 gallons of "blood" were used over the course of the shoot. 4.5 gallons of "blood" were used just to cut off Erik Palladino's head.

Viscera Film Festival Key Chain Project

Laughing Vixen Lounge is a proud sponsor of the 2013 Viscera Film Festival. The festival happens each July in Los Angeles, CA and features modern horror by women filmmakers. This is the third year the Lounge has sponsored the event. 100 key chains were sent out for their goodie bags and a bracelet for the silent auction. If you're in the area make sure to attend the event. It should be fun for any lover of the horror genre.

Here's a little peek at the process of making all those key chains. I hope to have them in the shop later this year but you can always purchase a pendant and ask for it as a key chain instead.

100 darker themed photos printed and trimmed.

Set out on the glass tray and ready to be covered with hand-poured resin.

Then a nice little dip in the UV oven to set the resin.

Then they get stuck into their new homes.

Add a key chain ring.

Voila! 100 little key chains all ready to go on their big adventure.

The key chains will be in good company as our friend Deep Midnight Perfume Oils has sent yummy perfume samples for the bags too. If you haven't yet stop by our Sweet Summertime Giveaway. Laughing Vixen Lounge and Deep Midnight Perfume Oils are giving away gift certificates to one lucky winner. Giveaway ends 6-16.
